Which <strong>nuragic villages<\/strong> are unmissable?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Su Nuraxi in Barumini<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Palmavera Nuragic Complex in Alghero<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Nuraghe Arrubiu in Orroli<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Su_Nuraxi_in_Barumini\"><\/span>Su Nuraxi in Barumini<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>In Barumini you\u2019ll find the best-preserved nuragic village on the island, declared a <em>UNESCO World Heritage Site<\/em> in 1997.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Su Nuraxi<\/strong> is the most famous and beloved site, both among tourists and locals. According to scholars, the first settlements date back to around <strong>1500 BC<\/strong>, making it one of the oldest nuragic sites. Its origins remain a mystery: some believe it was a religious complex, others think it was an urban centre, while others associate it with military or defensive functions. The name comes from the reddish colour of the stone caused by red lichens growing on its walls.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuraghe Arrubiu is composed of <strong>five main towers<\/strong>, a feature that distinguishes it from other nuraghi, which typically have four.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Archaeologists have uncovered artefacts from prehistoric times at this site.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"What_are_nuraghi\"><\/span>What are nuraghi?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>If you visit Sardinia, you can\u2019t miss a nuraghi tour\u2014especially if you love history. Between a paradisiacal beach and a search for traditional Sardinian murals, a perfect holiday must also include a <strong>visit to the island\u2019s most extraordinary archaeological sites<\/strong>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Nuraghi are one of the most important traces of the island\u2019s ancient civilisation. These <strong>Sardinian pyramids<\/strong>, commonly called nuraghi (from \u201cnur\u201d meaning heap of stones), are large, truncated-cone stone buildings. They fall into two main categories:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>corridor nuraghi<\/strong>, or protonuraghi, which are less common;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>tholos nuraghi<\/strong>, cone-shaped towers with circular chambers, niches and storage areas, widespread across the island.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Their walls can reach <strong>up to 4 metres thick<\/strong> and <strong>over 20 metres in height<\/strong>. Their purpose remains uncertain: astronomical observatories, religious sites, military structures, defensive towers or lookouts. It is very likely that their function varied depending on their location and surrounding environment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How can you explore Sardinia, the island of nuraghi? The best solution is to have your own means of transport to move freely across the territory.
