Did you know that there are many different types of cars you can choose from when renting? City cars, sedans, compact models — each category offers different features, not only in appearance but also, and especially, in cost.
Understanding these categories is an essential step in choosing the right vehicle. This way, you can identify the best option to organise your holiday in the most efficient way. As you probably know, to move around Sardinia easily and quickly, a vehicle — whether a car or scooter — is absolutely necessary.
Let’s take a look at which car rental category you should choose.
Car segments and classification
If it’s your first time renting a car, you may have noticed it isn’t as simple as it seems. To make the right choice, it’s essential to have all the necessary information and take a moment to reflect on what you expect from your trip.
Among the different vehicle groups you can choose from, you’ll find:
- economy
- automatic
- compact
- minivan
- standard
How can you distinguish them and understand the differences between each model? Let’s start with the codes. Every car is associated with a code that summarises the main information about that model. Generally, the first letter — separated by a dash or vertical bar — represents the vehicle group. The following letters specify additional features and help you understand the main characteristics.
What are the first letters used? Here’s a short guide:
- C = Compact
- E = Economy
- F = Upper-medium category
- I = Lower-medium category
- L = Premium luxury
- M = Mini
- P = Luxury
- S = Standard
- X = Special vehicles
The second letter indicates the size, such as number of doors or type of vehicle:
- B = 2 doors
- C = 3 doors
- D = 4 doors
- F = Four-wheel drive
- J = Off-road
- L = Sedan
- P = Pickup
- S = Sports
- T = Convertible
- V = Van/minibus
- W = Station wagon
- X = Special (indicates a defining special accessory on or inside the vehicle)
The third letter usually indicates the type of transmission: manual (M) or automatic (A).
These codes may vary depending on how the vehicle information is presented. For this reason, it’s always best to read the technical sheet carefully, especially when booking your car online.
Economy car rental
Economy cars are among the most affordable options. They are typically defined by engine type, number of passengers and luggage capacity.
Compact car rental
Compact cars are medium-sized models, sometimes sedans, suitable for travelling with 4 people on short trips or 2–3 people on longer journeys. This category is a step above economy vehicles.
Minivan rental
As the name suggests, a minivan is a large vehicle ideal for group travel, offering 7 to 9 seats. Minivans are an excellent choice when you are looking for comfort and safety, especially if your itinerary includes many kilometres.
Standard car rental
Standard cars are what most people consider “large cars”. They are very comfortable for long trips and can seat up to 5 passengers without compromising comfort or performance.
