What is the procedure to pick up a rental car? Today, we want to guide you through the steps to receive the car that will accompany you throughout your trip.
Here are some tips for picking up your vehicle.
Rental Car Collection
First-time travelers may not always be clear about the rules for renting a car, especially when it comes to collecting the vehicle. It is a fairly simple process that can be completed in just a few steps—nothing complicated or impossible. The key is knowing exactly what you need to pick up the car or motorcycle you have booked.
The most important thing is to remember to bring the required documents: ID card, driving license, and the accepted payment methods of the rental company.
Step 1: Go to the Rental Desk
After collecting your luggage, the first thing to do is locate the rental desk. They are usually found in the arrivals area; in other cases, they may be located near the baggage claim belts. If you’ve passed this area, don’t worry: in most cases, the office also has a presence in the public terminal area.
At smaller airports, the rental desk may be located outside the terminal, within a short walking distance. In these cases, the voucher for collection will include directions. Otherwise, you can contact the rental company by phone or ask for guidance inside the airport.
Remember to check if your chosen company provides a free shuttle service that takes you directly to the rental office.
Regarding opening hours, make sure to verify them in advance. Rental offices generally follow the airport schedule and remain operational as long as flights are arriving or departing. Therefore, you shouldn’t encounter any problems picking up your car.
Step 2: Waiting Time
During peak periods, waiting times before receiving your vehicle can be quite long, sometimes up to half an hour. Rental procedures take time and may require up to 15 minutes to complete.
Our advice is to reach the rental desk as quickly as possible, ahead of other passengers, to reduce the line in front of you. This tip is especially useful if your schedule is tight and you need the car as soon as possible.
If there’s a queue, take the opportunity to prepare all the documents they will ask for and carefully double-check what is included in your rental package.
Step 3: Required Documents
You will need three documents:
- Valid driving license – make sure everything is in order before departure;
- ID card or passport, also valid;
- Credit card or another payment method accepted by the rental company.
Signing the Contract and Vehicle Handover
To formalize the rental, you will need to sign the contract. It is very important to read it carefully to ensure that everything is correct, as previously agreed. In particular, check for:
- Any mileage limits;
- Fuel policy;
- Restrictions on which roads you can or cannot take;
- Type of insurance coverage.
After signing, the company will hand you the keys and provide instructions on where the vehicle is parked.
