Documents needed to rent a car

The first thing to do is check that you have all the documents required for car rental and make sure they are still valid. To travel with complete peace of mind, you will need:

  • an identity document
  • a valid driving licence
  • a credit card or other payment cards

These documents must be presented at the time of rental and must be in the name of the driver, who must be at least 21 years old and have at least two years of driving experience to use the service.

Identity document

Among the documents accepted for car rental are: a passport, an identity card (if the driver comes from EU or Schengen-area countries), and a military ID card with photo (if the driver is an Italian citizen).

Driving licence

The driving licence must meet a few essential requirements for car rental. In particular:

  • it must have been valid for at least one year;
  • its expiry date must be later than the end of the rental period;
  • it must be legible and in good condition.

In addition, the document must always be presented in its original version, without any changes other than those officially certified by the issuing Authority with the appropriate stamp.

For foreign driving licences printed in characters other than Latin (such as Chinese, Arabic, Japanese, Cyrillic and so on) and issued outside the European Union, an international driving permit must be presented together with the licence.

Credit card

A credit card is required by most companies that provide short-term car rental.
