To rent a car, agencies may accept different payment methods, from credit cards to cash. When using a credit card, it is essential that the available amount is sufficient to cover the credit limit.

But what exactly is the credit card limit in car rental, and how does it work?

Credit card and security deposit

When booking, rental companies require a payment method to finalise the process. As mentioned, some companies may allow rentals without a credit card and accept other payment methods, including cash and debit cards. At Ellepirental, for example, we allow customers to choose the payment option that best suits their needs.

Other agencies, however, only allow rentals with a credit card. If this is the chosen payment method, the card must meet a few essential requirements:

  • it must contain an amount sufficient to cover the credit limit
  • it must be in the name of the rental contract holder, and the card owner must be present at vehicle pick-up

Regardless of the payment method, a security deposit must be paid. This amount is temporarily blocked on the payment card. If paying in cash, the deposit must be paid in advance and will be refunded when the car is returned without damage.

The charge on the credit card takes place only upon return of the vehicle and after the contract is closed. Until then, the amount remains frozen and ready to be charged if necessary.

Which cards are accepted?

Depending on the company chosen to rent a car for your holiday, you may use different payment methods. At Ellepirental, we accept:

  • credit cards
  • debit cards
  • prepaid cards
  • cash
  • Bancomat
  • Maestro Card

The same applies to the security deposit, which accepts all methods except Bancomat and Maestro Card. Many agencies do not accept prepaid cards because they are not linked to a bank account and therefore do not guarantee adequate financial coverage.

If you’re wondering whether it’s possible to rent a car without a credit card, the answer is yes — you simply need to choose the right company.

Difference between security deposit and deductible

It’s very important not to confuse these two common terms used in car rental. The security deposit is an amount the driver must provide to the rental company when collecting the vehicle. This sum will cover any damage identified when the car is returned. If no damage is found, the amount is refunded or released in the case of credit card payments.

The deductible refers to the maximum amount the driver agrees to pay in case of damage, and it is a fixed sum defined when booking.
